Mount Herzel - Jerusalem

Next to the Holocaust memorial museum Yad Vashem and not far from the Israel Museum, Mount Herzel is home to many national, military graves including an entire plaza dedicated to Theodore Herzl (founder of zionism, author of "The Jewish State") as well as a museum in Herzl's honour at the foot of the mount.  The museum is more of an audio visual experience than a traditional museum.  It presents the story of Herzl's life and uses a storyline in which an actor rehearses for a play in order to develop Herzl as a heroic character and construct his identity as a the "father' of the modern state of Israel.  The museum concluded with a film celebrating Israeli achievements, which it presented as the realization of Herzl's dream given the necessity it argued for the differences between Herzl's vision and the modern state.  The mount and museum are run by the World Zionist Organization.
